Father of the Guide

Click on the photo to see it bigger.

This is Fadel, who I met at his camp outside the Baharaya Oasis in the northern Sahara. He put us up for the night, fed and watered us and got us stoned on his locally made hashish until the card game we taught him disintegrated into fits of giggles and and we crept off to bed. The next morning it was his son Mohamed who took us out into the White Desert.

What is going on?

Skip this post if mundane photographs bore you to death... A bunch of pictures shot on my iPhone since sometime towards the end of last summer - I don't use the phone camera much, so the story's not very complete. Those that have been edited were edited on the phone using something called Photogene.

Gordon Howell

My maternal grandfather. I did a quick session with him last summer, and posted a couple to my portfolio but I just happened to look through them again and found this shot. He's a wonderful subject who's had an amazing life so far.

A Cairo Story, Part II.

Some more pictures from Cairo, Egypt.

Everywhere we went we were greeted with a chorus of 'Welcome to Cairo! Welcom to Egypt!' which, as nice as it seemed at first, became a real pain in the ass. This kid didn't actually say either which was a relief.

Fruit shot at our favourite juice bar; the fresh juices in Cairo were amazing. Every morning started with at least two.

Reading Taxi by Khalid al-Khamissi, a great way in to popular thought from the perspective of Cairo cab drivers... and drinking the local Stella which has been produced in Egypt since the 1700s and there isn't a bar that doesn't sell it.

That's the Citadel in the distance.
